Introduction

The modern world has not rejected Jesus.
It has redesigned Him.

We still sing His songs.
We still quote His words.

But somewhere along the way, we quietly modified Him.

This is why the modern Jesus is compassionate but never confrontational. He affirms but never corrects. He supports but never commands. He exists to validate our identity, not redefine it. He heals our anxiety but never addresses our sin. He offers advice but rarely demands surrender.

He looks remarkably like us.

And that should alarm us.

The most dangerous threat to Christianity today is not atheism. It is not persecution. It is not even immorality.

It is domestication — the taming of the Son of God.

We have not denied Christ — we have edited Him.

We have taken the infinite, holy Son of God and adjusted Him to fit within the comfort zone of modern sensibilities. We have elevated the attributes we prefer and quietly lowered the ones that unsettle us. We celebrate His love while muting His holiness. We cherish His mercy while sidelining His justice. We want Him powerful enough to bless us but not sovereign enough to rule us.

Instead of asking, "Who is Jesus?" we now insist, "My Jesus wouldn't..."

And with that subtle shift, we move from worship to construction.

This book confronts a painful possibility: It is entirely possible to speak the name of Jesus and not know Him. To admire Him and never submit to Him. To build a version of Him that comforts us while quietly distancing ourselves from the One who actually is.

The Jesus of Scripture is not customizable.

He is not a life coach, a mascot, a political endorsement, or a therapeutic accessory. He is not a consultant offering optional improvements to your already-established life. He is not a brand to enhance your identity.

He is Lord.
